Interview: Susan Shapiro

Susan Shapiro describes herself as "the author of many books my family hates." Most recently she has coauthored the bestseller American Shield (Counterpoint) and authored Barbie (Assouline). She's an award winning professor now teaching online (https://lnkd.in/eH4cM3n6).

What advice would you give to an aspiring writer trying to survive capitalism?

"A former student of mine, Marci Alboher, wrote a book called “One Person, Multiple Careers” where she argued that this is the wave of the future.

She interviewed me in a section about writer/teachers, which is a common combination.

For the last few decades, I’d written by day and taught writing by night at NYU, The New School, Columbia University, and now in online classes. I’ve always found that having two careers is the way to go.

Freelance writing can be very inconsistent. But when I teach the equation is: I show up, they pay me.

I recommend others in creative fields do the same -do what you love but also at the same time work at a paying gig for at least part-time, 10 hours a week. "
